He is probably going to deny this up and down, but he needs help. He told me this once via email, how he likes to buy beef jerky just to get the silica packets. I'm sharing this with you, because Bert needs help and hopefully the fora can help me convince him to get help. Please Bert, get help, people are worried about you.

Silica gel is chemically and biologically inert. If ingested, mild gastrointestinal (GI) signs are possible. Main risk: The packets can potentially cause an obstruction in the intestines if the whole packet is swallowed, especially in small dogs. (The packaging is often the biggest risk in the case of all these toxins.
As I read this unless bert is a small dog, then he is free to eat all of those packets and they probably go well with 5 shots of booze. They probably also enhance his cruddy choice of pizza.

He eats them like chips... He steals jerky to feed his habit... He tells me if he is feeling mild GI irritation then at least he is feeling something...

Do those even really work? They're supposed to absorb water but there's no way it could absorb more than a teaspoon

There shouldnt be that much moisture in a sealed packet of dry goods in the first place so a packet should be sufficient
They're not used to dry out something left, out of the package, in the rain

This. Also, oxygen absorbers help to keep air out of a sealed package.

If the package is already sealed and dry then what's the point???? You've got this thing that absorbs water, but it only works if it's in a sealed, watertight, dry package.
Sounds like a placebo to me.

Theres moisture in the packet when it's sealed. The silica absorbs that so the sealed product doesn't mold inside the packaging.

Cost and practicality. Air has moisture in it, dehumidifying an environment is fuckin expensive. When i had to get stuff moisture-free in chem labs it was in an 800 degree Celsius oven for an hour. I dont think the average packet of beef jerky would be that good after that. And silica is cheaper than that anyway.

Beef jerky isn't supposed to be totally dry though. The packets are a placebo and don't do shit. The last beef jerky I ate didn't even have the stupid packets in it and it was just fine.

New theory: The silica packets in beef jerky are actually flavor packets that you are supposed to eat in concert with the beef jerky. Has anyone tried this?
