Topic: How do you read quietly?

Catherine !ttGirlsPl2 started this discussion 7 years ago #84,507

I am sick of reading aloud and that could be one reason why I hated reading, but it goes beyond that. Whenever I have to read something it’s like I suddenly have hyperactivity and Tourette’s having to constantly repeat sentences five or eight times for my brain to register the information even though I know I could read it two or even one time and still retained. I don’t know why I am such a fucking rword when it comes to reading, but I want it to stop and I think this would make reading less of a challenge and chore for me. I want to be able to read to myself without having to rely on an automated voice reading along with me.

I’ve been trying to go cold turkey and force myself to read quietly though I always end up just humming the words and my lips vibrate. I just want to be normal so I could read things like textbooks and other things without having to slow down to read one fucking sentence.

Fuck.

Try this. Read a couple of pages and record that. Then play it back and use headphones.
Try a simple book like the one titled: See spot run, as a book on tape.

Just do that as a exercise and report back the results.

You said
> I am sick of reading aloud

If you try what I suggested you will listen to the story or what you recorded and not read out loud. If it is new material you will learn something or just enjoy the story. Give it a try because you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Read using your inner-monologue. Thanks.

Everything, some things multiple times.

I’m not discrediting your idea and I have made note of it though I am still open to other suggestions since I want this to be a worse case scenario solution.

@970,828 (Fake anon !ZkUt8arUCU)
Yeah, I thought you knew that from when I admitted that before here. lol

Question. Over the many years you have attended classes. When it was necessary to read something written on a white board. Or when taking a test - I doubt you read out loud unless you whispered?

I try to keep my voice down as I read though sometimes it comes out loud since I apparently lack the ability to know the volume of my own voice though I know a girl who had that same predicament so that doesn’t make me feel abnormal.

Also, I found this from a Google search and step 3 in this teacher’s guide seems to help. Practice reading a sentence with a whisper and then only my lips and then just my eyes then just practice. Seems like a pretty good algorithm that I may have already started implementing. I read that whole thing silently!

Though I get headaches when I read.

Looks like a good start.

Algorithm:

Read a few sentences with a whisper
Read a few sentences while moving your lips silently
Read a few sentences while only moving your eyes left-to-right
Repeat as necessary
