It's an arbitrary convention. More modern applications support ctrl + w or ctrl + q. That's all there is to it.

Some programs which make use of internet explorer or other gui applications may use the api to send the keystrokes alt f4.

You don't sound like a programmer. You can't just start making assumptions that changing the environment which a program runs won't cause problems for some applications. THis is the philosphy that windows has had since windows 3.1 and prior. It's also the philosphy that intel has held for over 40 years. which is why you can run 16 bit code on even the newest 64bit processors.

False. Wolfenstein 3D will not run on Windows 7, and neither will VisiCalc.

I find it odd that you actually defend this. No DOS program will run on Windows 7, and yet, you claim stupid key combos are for backward compatibility. HOw can you, be that dense?
