The refutations seem tepid and non-committal. It's absolutely amazing that with all the surveillance we have they can't either charge someone with the crime or prove it was all faked, even in a high profile case.

Well, people like to believe they have been lied to sometimes. It makes them feel special. It also reassures them that there is order in this world that they can see and identify. An unsolved crime is boring and unsatisfying. You can just feel sorry for the victim, but you don't have that emotional closure that comes with finding the culprit. Making it into a hoax provides a cause for the effect. It's a little magic trick where you can turn the victim into the perpetrator. Finally there is someone to blame for all those bad thoughts feelings. It's a tidy and emotionally satisfying conclusion that people want to believe because it's easy.

I have no idea how enthusiastic CPD regularly is about tackling media rumors, so I'm not sure how to judge what tepid or non-committal looks like. They've said the reports about the hoax are unfounded. Apparently, the guy was treated at a hospital for wounds he sustained and there was a letter that may or may not be connected.

Certainly I've seen lots of stuff on the news where surveillance footage helped solve crimes or at least they could show video of the attack with a shitty pixelated closeup of the perp with a number to call in case anyone had any info. Not even that in this case. Apparently somehow he vanished from surveillance for like two minutes which is when the attack happened but I really doubt Smollett or his attackers spent time researching what areas of Chicago are not covered by cameras and... it's so weird.
The hot sauce bottle full of bleach a reporter found is weird too. Why a hot sauce bottle? That's not inconspicuous at all! I mean if you wanted to carry bleach to attack someone wouldn't you put it in, oh I don't know, a water bottle. You know, a bottle full of clear liquid no one would think twice about you holding.
It reminds me of this kid in high school, and I swear to God this is true, he brought vodka in an empty shampoo bottle and took a drink during class. Just taking a swig of Head and Shoulders - nothing to see here! He got expelled.

There might be a clue in this letter from "MAGA" he received a week before he was attacked ?It reads "you will die black fag" and there's a cartoon of someone getting lynched and shot at simultaneously.
Given the similarity to the language used by the assailants, I think there's a high probability whoever attacked him sent the letter.

Of course, his attorneys are saying the hoax is a hoax. CPD is still not making very meaningful statements.

Well I think that two white dudes in maga hats were at a Subway in Chicago at 2am during a polar vortex blizzard just waiting around with a noose and some bleach in the hope that they would meet a gay black man that they recognized from watching a TV show with an all black cast and then yell "this is maga country" because Chicago is maga country and then they scratched his face and there is video evidence that he didn't drop his sandwich during this lynching.

When I heard that I was initially sympathetic because the crime of giving "false information" to law enforcement is often bullshit and lots of actors get DUIs but identifying yourself as your brother is a pretty shitty thing to do. Harris secretly met with this z-list actor to drum up support for a bill that probably will never pass a vote in the Senate if it even gets brought to the floor in an R-controlled Senate anyway, and will probably just get vetoed even if it somehow passes the Senate. And she would do this medium risk/no reward plot while running for president? It's just a dumb theory that makes no sense. I get why Trump supporters are pushing it, spreading FUD about leading Dem candidates makes a lot of strategic sense. I don't get why non-Trump people like kook buy into it.

The "you will die black fag" letter has Smollett, Jussie printed at the top. It looks like a Dymo printer or they printed it and cut it out. What would they print that?? It visually ruins the letter, the rest of which is either handwritten or cut and pasted magazine letters. Were they too lazy to cut out another 14 letters?
The other thing I thought about is the stamps. They found stamps in the Super Nigerian Brothers' apartment but that doesn't prove anything because everyone has a book of stamps in their house. Why doesn't the USPS put a little serial number on stamps? That way they could tell if two stamps came from the same book.
Also the drawing. Why would you shoot someone you just lynched? It's just redundant.

Apparently he narrated an episode of something called America Divided that was about lynching. I looked that up for about 30 seconds and gave up and then just decided it's probably true. Because this whole thing is retarded.

Paying people to make terroristic threats to...yourself seems a bit different than just like the regular old terroristic threats. Not defending Smollett, but this is a very unusual case. The fact that charges were dropped feels 100% like it was bought off somehow either with cash or political favors called in though.

Smollett isn't that rich or powerful though, is he? I thought he was like a C-list actor no one ever even heard of before this. Given the mayor of Chicago is pissed off about this (calling it a "whitewash of justice") who could have done this? And why for such a ridiculous case?
