The refutations seem tepid and non-committal. It's absolutely amazing that with all the surveillance we have they can't either charge someone with the crime or prove it was all faked, even in a high profile case.

I was expecting video of the actual attack (whether it was real or staged) within days.

Anonymous D replied with this 7 years ago, 1 minute later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #968,063

@968,054 (Sheila LaBoof)
Well, people like to believe they have been lied to sometimes. It makes them feel special. It also reassures them that there is order in this world that they can see and identify. An unsolved crime is boring and unsatisfying. You can just feel sorry for the victim, but you don't have that emotional closure that comes with finding the culprit. Making it into a hoax provides a cause for the effect. It's a little magic trick where you can turn the victim into the perpetrator. Finally there is someone to blame for all those bad thoughts feelings. It's a tidy and emotionally satisfying conclusion that people want to believe because it's easy.

> I was expecting video of the actual attack
IKR? Who doesn't have three cameras focused on them all the time nowadays? You would think there would be a traffic camera or someone's nest cam or something right?

I have no idea how enthusiastic CPD regularly is about tackling media rumors, so I'm not sure how to judge what tepid or non-committal looks like. They've said the reports about the hoax are unfounded. Apparently, the guy was treated at a hospital for wounds he sustained and there was a letter that may or may not be connected.

@previous (Meta !Sober//iZs)
Maybe just let the police figure it out?

Meta !Sober//iZs replied with this 7 years ago, 12 minutes later, 2 hours after the original post[^] [v] #968,079

Certainly I've seen lots of stuff on the news where surveillance footage helped solve crimes or at least they could show video of the attack with a shitty pixelated closeup of the perp with a number to call in case anyone had any info. Not even that in this case. Apparently somehow he vanished from surveillance for like two minutes which is when the attack happened but I really doubt Smollett or his attackers spent time researching what areas of Chicago are not covered by cameras and... it's so weird.

The hot sauce bottle full of bleach a reporter found is weird too. Why a hot sauce bottle? That's not inconspicuous at all! I mean if you wanted to carry bleach to attack someone wouldn't you put it in, oh I don't know, a water bottle. You know, a bottle full of clear liquid no one would think twice about you holding.

It reminds me of this kid in high school, and I swear to God this is true, he brought vodka in an empty shampoo bottle and took a drink during class. Just taking a swig of Head and Shoulders - nothing to see here! He got expelled.

From TMZ:
Jussie Smollett has turned from a presumed victim to suspect in the criminal investigation into the alleged racist, homophobic attack, and sources say there is mounting evidence the 2 brothers who were arrested and subsequently released were acting at Jussie's behest and reportedly paid.

Our sources say the brothers -- both of whom worked on the "Empire" set -- "completely cooperated" with Chicago cops during their interrogation over the last few days.

One law enforcement source tells TMZ at least one of the brothers turned over his phone and there is a call between him and Jussie in the vicinity of the "attack," but before it happened

So he refused to give the police his phone and tried to give them instead a printed PDF of his phone records, but with some numbers redacted. But on the Nigerian guys phone, they found phone calls between Smollet and the Nigerian in the area that the attack occurred.
This is so fucked up

It looks like TMZ, CBS, and a lot other places are reporting about CNN's reporting. There's a lot of "CNN is reporting..." in the articles. I feel like, on any other day, a report based on CNN's unnamed sources would be treated with skepticism or outright derision. Apparently, the rules don't apply for this story. Shit, kook has already tried and convicted him in her head based on that. She's furious and wants him fired.

> It's on all the mainstream news: ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, Washington Post, NYT
Except they're not all running the hoax story. It's interesting to read the different coverage that is all based on the same few facts. I wish the ones that are running a hoax headline would agree on anything though. Some are claiming he flew the two brothers out from Nigeria and paid them to stage an attack. Some are saying one of the brothers worked with him. Some are saying both did. Some reports they bought the rope at ACE hardware. Some say they bought it at a local Crafty Beaver hardware store. Of course, his attorneys are saying the hoax is a hoax. CPD is still not making very meaningful statements.

I think it will be interesting to see how it works out in the end. If it was staged, then why? Was it a failed PR stunt? Did he only invent some parts of the story to paint over some shady event gone wrong? Was the letter connected?

Well I think that two white dudes in maga hats were at a Subway in Chicago at 2am during a polar vortex blizzard just waiting around with a noose and some bleach in the hope that they would meet a gay black man that they recognized from watching a TV show with an all black cast and then yell "this is maga country" because Chicago is maga country and then they scratched his face and there is video evidence that he didn't drop his sandwich during this lynching.

The vicious attack on actor Jussie Smollett was an attempted modern-day lynching. I'm glad he's safe. To those in Congress who don't feel the urgency to pass our Anti-Lynching bill designating lynching as a federal hate crime– I urge you to pay attention.

TMZ reports Jussie Smollett turned down an offer by Fox for 24/7 bodyguards a week before "the brutal attack."

Our sources say he made the decision to not have extra security during off-hours because it was an intrusive way of living.

Jussie Smollett’s ‘Empire’ scenes cut after attack controversy
By Lia Eustachewich

Scenes featuring Jussie Smollett on the hit TV show “Empire” have been drastically cut amid the whirlwind of controversy surrounding his alleged hate attack, according to a report Tuesday.

The actor, who plays gay singer-songwriter Jamal Lyon on the show, was supposed to have nine scenes and a big musical performance in the second-to-last episode of Season 5, production sources told TMZ.

But five scenes and the musical number have been axed.

Smollett’s character is also no longer the focus of his remaining four scenes, which will now feature an ensemble of characters.

The 36-year-old actor is spending far less time on set as a result. He’ll be working Friday and possibly Thursday but won’t be rehearsing.

“Empire” scriptwriters have been scrambling over the last 24 hours to revise this season’s scripts.

Smollett claims he was the victim of a racist and homophobic attack near his Chicago apartment Jan. 29, but suspicion has since emerged that he paid two friends to help stage the assault.

There’s a 50/50 chance that a grand jury will begin weighing an indictment as early as Tuesday, TMZ said. Smollett could be charged with felony filing a false police report.

In 2007 he was convicted of providing false info to the police

https://m.washingtontimes.com/news/2019/feb/19/jussie-smollett-apparent-hoax-burns-democrats-kama/

Citing a Los Angeles City Attorney spokesman, NBC reported that Mr. Smollett was sentenced to two years probation in the case, which also included a DUI count and a charge of driving without a license.

The city attorney’s office first confirmed the convictions to NBC News and later other media outlets confirmed the story.

Citing “multiple law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation,” NBC News reported that the Chicago Police Department has requested the details from their counterparts in Los Angeles.

According to the Associated Press, when Mr. Smollett was pulled over on suspicion of DUI, he identified himself as his brother Jake and also signed a false name on the standard “promise to appear in court” paperwork. He was initially charged with the more serious crime of impersonation but pleaded no contest to a lesser count of giving false information to police.

I wouldn't know how popular ski masks are in Chicago. Certainly the weather at the time (below zero, extreme wind chill) would necessitate some kind of face protection I would think. I'm a Houstonian though so I'm probably not the expert on cold weather apparel.

That being said, the purchase was odd enough that the store staff remembered it which I don't think they would if everyone was buying ski masks. The statement of the store security guard is puzzling:
Security guard Montago Silas said he was asked by the siblings if the store sold ski masks, but the business did not have the traditional balaclava-type mask; they only carried the kind with separate eyeholes. He thought it strange that they purchased them.

"It was bizarre because it was unusual for people to purchase these type of masks, not since the 70s, but I thought it was a little strange," Montago said.

If the ski mask they bought is so uncommon and no one's been buying them since the '70s why did the store have them in stock???

Fairly uncommon. I just don't get the theory of it. Harris secretly met with this z-list actor to drum up support for a bill that probably will never pass a vote in the Senate if it even gets brought to the floor in an R-controlled Senate anyway, and will probably just get vetoed even if it somehow passes the Senate. And she would do this medium risk/no reward plot while running for president? It's just a dumb theory that makes no sense. I get why Trump supporters are pushing it, spreading FUD about leading Dem candidates makes a lot of strategic sense. I don't get why non-Trump people like kook buy into it.

It's such a detailed about of evidence down to having to put off the fake crime by 4 hour due to a late plane arrival - Taxi cab cameras of pick ups and drop offs - phone calls back and forth including when the Nigerians were about to leave US for Nigeria as well as calls when there plane landed

I just rolled the recording of what what she read - 14.30 Minutes of text she read of detailed EVIDENCE WoW

Betting Jussie cops some kind of plea to get this off his back. His attorney says they will launch a major defense but of course that is $$$ in Attorney's bank account

Quick look at web and text of her evidence is not posted YET and I have one of those meetings to get to
No doubt it will be up on youtube soon - It will be a truly worthwhile view of 14.30 minutes - Some of it will cause your jaw to drop open.

I certainly don't think Kamala asked him to do it or even knew about it in advance. Though if Jussie said he did it in part to help her presidential aspirations I wouldn't be surprised.

Yeah, I could see that happening, though it's possible he just used the publicity around her bill to hype up his own fake crime.

Idk. On the one hand it would save them a lot of headache. On the other hand, if the facts are as they indicated, this is as much of a slam dunk can't lose case as you'll likely get from the cops POV.

Of course. Otherwise a long trial is costly. That said HE has to stand up and admit totally to the publicity stunt and pay restitution for the costs of investigating etc.

Externally hosted imageThe "you will die black fag" letter has Smollett, Jussie printed at the top. It looks like a Dymo printer or they printed it and cut it out.

What would they print that?? It visually ruins the letter, the rest of which is either handwritten or cut and pasted magazine letters. Were they too lazy to cut out another 14 letters?

The other thing I thought about is the stamps. They found stamps in the Super Nigerian Brothers' apartment but that doesn't prove anything because everyone has a book of stamps in their house. Why doesn't the USPS put a little serial number on stamps? That way they could tell if two stamps came from the same book.

Also the drawing. Why would you shoot someone you just lynched? It's just redundant.

Anonymous K replied with this 7 years ago, 1 day later, 1 week after the original post[^] [v] #971,568

Apparently he narrated an episode of something called America Divided that was about lynching. I looked that up for about 30 seconds and gave up and then just decided it's probably true. Because this whole thing is retarded.

I also heard that he kept the rope around his neck while he walked home and waited for the cops and was still wearing it around and shit while they interviewed him. That may have been mentioned already in this thread but I'm not reading through the whole thing again.

I wonder if there will still be a federal investigation?

Paying people to make terroristic threats to...yourself seems a bit different than just like the regular old terroristic threats. Not defending Smollett, but this is a very unusual case. The fact that charges were dropped feels 100% like it was bought off somehow either with cash or political favors called in though.

Yeah mailing it with the white powder in it is 100% a federal crime. The "you will die" thing was aimed specifically at him though. Not that any of this matters because the city isn't going to prosecute (feds might, who knows).

In a statement, Fox said, “Jussie Smollett has always maintained his innocence and we are gratified on his behalf that all charges against him have been dismissed.”

After delivering his remarks on Tuesday, Mr. Smollett was immediately surrounded by fans — one shouting “Free Jussie!” — and posed for selfies before being ushered into a black SUV.

I wonder how many more death threats he'll receive now. I guess he could just forward them all to the FBI's Chicago office to keep them busy for a while.

The number of death threats he'll receive is directly proportional to the number of magazines and scissors he can get his hands on.

Smollett isn't that rich or powerful though, is he? I thought he was like a C-list actor no one ever even heard of before this. Given the mayor of Chicago is pissed off about this (calling it a "whitewash of justice") who could have done this? And why for such a ridiculous case?

Might be that he's locally quite popular within Chicago itself? Or he has some connection to the AG's office. It's weird for the mayor to say he should be prosecuted and the AG to say no.
@previous (D)
Maybe. He's kind of fucked his own life even without other people's death threats. I don't have a lot of sympathy for this guy, though anyone sending death threats to him is a deranged moron who should be prosecuted.
