If you like reading, you should also read In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. It's boring at first, but if you push through the tedious stuff it gets very good later on.

Absolutely, especially if you've read all his other work, he ties many, many, previous characters from other stories seamlessly and flawlessly into the series. It took me over a decade to finish the series, because it took him that long to write it.

The first book won't leave much of an impression on you. Though I can still remember the first line. "The man in black fled across the desert, and Roland followed". I believe that's it exactly.
The first book is actually pretty short, stick with the series, it will be worth it. The most epic and wonderful story I have ever read, I was truly sad to see it end.
