...but they are non-hostile as their goal is to observe and study the universe and earth for as long as they feel it necessary. This is their reward for a good life or perhaps it is their "unfinished business." These are souls who refused any kind of afterlife to spend that afterlife here with us to study all things within this celestial plain. This sounds like a very cool afterlife. To be a free-roaming ghost to do whatever you want in the universe. It's the ultimate spectator mode.

I feel that would be pretty fun sometimes. It would probably also be a little maddening to be stuck watching stuff happen.
