The programming is either really boring and for old people, Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me, Car Talk, This American Life, or it’s polite center-left political commentary like Here and Now, Diane Rheam, All Things Considered.
They have some good stuff like Radiolab but you can just download it as a podcast. They also have annoying donation drives every year. I used to listen to NPR and the local classical station exclusively until I got satellite radio.
