Topic: Kook, what do you think of Telltale Atheist?

Catherine !ttGirlsPl2 started this discussion 7 years ago #83,963

I honestly like this guy. He's not up his own ass and some of his experience with Jehovah's Witnesses (he was one) is actually fairly interesting. He also makes videos determining what is and what isn't a cult.

His Satanism video was quite interesting and I had no idea there was more than one branch.

Please tell me you're not taking advice on what is and isn't a branch of satanism from a JW, and please don't decide what is and isn't a cult based on what a JW says.

Spoiler alert: Satanism is a pretend religion to ease people who don't want to believe in God anymore into a nice sense of comfort. If that's what you need, fine. A lot of us need a cushion. The Satanic temple is great for a troll thing, but don't actually confuse it with life. A lot of people who leave the religion they were born into do a lot of searching. If you can't deal with the sheer nihilism of no one giving a fuck about you except your parents, that's only human. It takes a lot of searching and humility to admit that you are really the only one who gives a shit about you. It takes a lot of exploring and sometimes a lot of testing to arrive at that. Once you get there, please don't start acting like a selfish bitch. It doesn't make you look like a rebel. There is a lot of good in (part of) what religion has been doing. Keep caring for others and honoring your parents and generally being a shining beacon of virtue. It doesn't matter that God doesn't shine out of your eyes anymore. It's the human part that really makes a difference and endears everyone to you as someone who has true value to yourself and others.

Yeah, I get that. I'm just cautioning against pressing someone to the floor like he does in his videos. I'm all for Bogosian-style rational conversion, but it flies in the face of what people tend to do. Which is usually just making a Christian into a woo-y Christian who seeks out a psychic palm reader or something. I think there is a rational way to explain that religion is a stupid remnant of history in which people cling to traditional beliefs. It just has to be gentle for some people. They need to understand it in steps. I think starting with the idea that understanding your fellow human has to be your guiding star. It's too easy to get caught up in the false god of thinking you're better than them because they don't see the truth. You really need a philosophy where you start at the bottom.

And really, I've listened to a million street epistemology conversations. It's not quite that easy. It takes some stepping back from deeply held beliefs over time. If you pin someone down and tell them they are wrong, they just move over to a new thing. You end up playing a game of whack-a-mole.

Thanks. I'm trying to merge an interest in psychology and religion into one thing. I think understanding other people and their motivations might help society.

Don't let me put you off actually listening to this person. I think he has a lot to say, and his experiences speak to it. I just watched a bunch a of his videos. He is very compelling. He has a certain wisdom. Just don't let letting go of something propel you into something worse. Just because you are going in a different direction, it doesn't necessarily mean it's the right one. It takes time. Just... rein it in. Be skeptical of new places to go until you're sure of what you're stepping into.

BTW, I think his view of Mormonism is shallow and vapid. It relies on the Book of Abraham which is a pretend vision in a dream Joe used to excuse himself from some shit while taking a bunch of wives and appealing to a trend in the US of thinking ancient Egyptian artifacts were some kind relics from the holy land. It may have also inadvertently kickstarted the Adam as God doctrine, if the weird kabbalah studies didn't do that earlier. Even faithful Mormons scoff at the idea he "translated" some funeral papyri from some random dude. Not that his view of Mormonism is wrong. Just that he's really making a strawman out of nothing. There is a good deal of racism inherent in Mormonism. Especially once Brigham Young got a hold on the church.

It's obvious I have a lot feelings about this subject. Usually, Becky is here to stop me from doing this. Maybe I should start a blog.
