Topic: Kook, have you ever heard about Hikikomori?

Catherine !ttGirlsPl2 started this discussion 7 years ago #83,416

Externally hosted imageThey are those who shelter themselves away from society. It usually affects men, but has been known to also include women. The Japanese government is looking to get a better understanding of hikikomori, but in the meantime, there is a service called, "Rent-A-Sister" where these women go over to the houses of hikikomori to try and get them to engage more in society. The thing is that it works actually and many of them have manged to re-enter society as productive independents.

The BBC did a documentary on them.

https://youtu.be/q9IRmUEsz6g

It gets a little depressing though since some of these hikikimori die alone. Here is another documentary, I think it's from a French news show, explaining a bit more about this phenomenon.

Like, seriously... did you even evaluate the quote you stole? Do you just enjoy being contrary for no reason?

So... you are telling me that a Hikikomori can be engaged in Employment, Education, Training while remaining a hikki?

What is your fucking problem?

Agoraphobia usually see family and allow visitors. Hikkikomori aren't like that. They live with their parents, and sometimes don't see them for years. Also sometimes Hikkikomori do leave the house to go to a convenience store if it's in walking distance.
Another thing. I think that agoraphobics aren't split close to evenly, but most Hikkikomori are overwhelmingly male.

You mean female agoraphobics? Yeah. I once saw a documentary about a Chinese woman who was so scared of leaving her house that she didn't even put her trash outside. Her home was covered in huge piles of trash, bear in mind this was a typical tiny chinese apartment.

Rent-A-Family follows the story of Fumihiro and Kokoro Takahashi, an aged couple who lost their son, his wife and their young grandchild in the 2011 tsunami, and use the rent-a-family service to rent a new son, a new wife and a new grandchild to help them through the grieving process. The series follows the group as they bond ever-closer, inviting the viewer to ponder on what it means to be a "real family".
