I think viewing Mohammad through a modern lens where we try to reconcile his behavior to our own standards of right is already taking things too far out of context. His conception of "marriage" and "of age" were specific to his time and place. Insisting that he must have been a perfect gentleman by our modern standards and trying to make excuses for his actions feels more like propping up a convenient fiction whose only function is to make people comfortable.

Isn't the modern standard the exact same reasoning that you displayed though? The modern standard is this confused ambiguity which is there because although we don't want to shit on people's religions, not all religions conform to our own beliefs. I think losing track of that idea is dangerous, particularly since there is such a push to turn him into more of a myth than a man. If we want to seriously look at him as a historical figure, then it is important that we don't paper over all the parts of his history that we might find repugnant.
