Topic: Do you consider it odd if a wife doesn't cook for her husband?
Catherine !ttGirlsPl2 started this discussion 7 years ago#83,301
My sister-in-law cooks and knows how to cook well, but I don't think she cooks for her husband, my brother. I'm not sure why and that's none of my business, but my mother finds it odd since they want to move out soon meaning that she'll likely have to take up the cooking duties or else my brother will be sticking to microwavable meals and easy to cook meals in the oven. Not sure if this is because she cooks mostly Chinese dishes and he is a picky eater, but this is something that has boggled my mind a bit. Right now, my mother cooks for him, her, and myself; my sister-in-law tends to cook for herself. Is this strange or is this just how marriage goes nowadays?

Please ask her to post some of her favorite recipes. We need the real deal and not that other nonsense Indy posts.

Have you tried sister in laws food?

If you can't cook for yourself you are a manchild.

I've tried some of them, yes, but one of the dishes was store bought dumplings that came from a local Asian market.

I don't think me being a manchild is news to anyone here.

Sorry I didn't mean to insult you! I just think the stereotype of the woman cooking while the man drinks whiskey and watches the sportsball game is kind of played out and grown men shouldn't expect the women in their life to do all the housechores.

I think my brother shares this view too and I tried to tell my mother that he might not want her to do the cooking, but she only says, "Well, he needs to get used to it, since somebody will have to do the cooking." I think she mostly wants her to cook for him just so it's a relief on her knowing that she doesn't have to even though technically she doesn't since my brother always tells her that they would "fend for themselves." Whenever she and I go out to eat she always feels obligated to bring them home something.
I acknowledge that I am a child so where's the insult? lol

I think you need to ask her to cook a multi course Chinese meal. Even just three. Encourage her.
You could even offer to slice and dice the ingredients for her.

Which is why all of us are aghast that you think you could make a good parent.

What makes you think I am doing this because I'm having kids right away? It might be years before I ever have a kid.
Is no one able to look long term anymore? How come it seems like a lot of people only focus on the short term?
Raising a kid in my current state of mind is quite obviously the dumbest thing to do.
I have a lot to work on myself to do before I could ever raise a kid.

Based on your current rate of development. Maybe by the time you reach age 65 or in that neighborhood, you could consider parenthood.

My brother is 40 and he knows how to pop things into the stove, cook eggs, and such. His wife (age: 29) really cooks and it’s like watching a chef. I would imagine she knows how to cook because of how she was raised since China seems really traditional in terms of gender roles.

It unsettles me when adults rely on others to cook for them, clean their clothes, and so on. These are basic skills. I don't understand how people don't pick them up via sheer osmosis alone.

She's not a mail order bride. They met on Tinder and if I recall correctly, they had their first date a few hours and/or days after the fact. She moved in around the same time too.

I would say this is true, but he tends to hate "white people food" which is why he doesn't want to visit Cracker Barrel. Yet at the same time, he is too afraid to eat the food that she makes.

I don't think I would put microwavable taquitos and mini tacos on a stove top, but I was certainly doing basic cooking on a stove top by age 12 and microwaving things much earlier than that.

I just cannot understand how you are in proximity to real Chinese food where local ''Safe ingredients" are used, and you have have not asked to try a full entree. Bobbles my mind.
