When a group brutally humiliates you, especially in childhood, you are more likely to recover if you believe it's your own fault. We all have a idea of how others see us, if this idea is destroyed and even worse, there's no meaning behind its destruction, then you've lost the ability for social authority because deeply you believe you can have no influence in how you are perceived by your peers. Violence is the result of insecure power, a power that has to assert itself.
