> A bit curious about this. How did people know to watch MTV on the first day? How hyped was that shit?
Don't really remember exactly how...it was probably that our cable had very few channels as compared with today...and we spotted it just looking to see what was on that particular day..
I remember getting all hot watching Marsha Blackburn..

First of all, no it didn’t. Second, that’s what I’m asking retard... how hyped was it? ie, ‘ to what extent were people face blasted with the existence of the new channel prior to its launch?’ I think most people who claim they watched the virginal second of MTV are full of shit or just plain confabulated.

You also asked how people knew about MTV. It was through ads and people were hyped. Thanks.

You're probably right. The "original" fans of MTV are in their 50s or older now.
Anon B probably hit on something with there being fewer cable channels. For the first handful of years, MTV stood out plain as day if you were flipping through the stations. I don't think it was a matter of hyping it and getting a massive audience immediately. It took a few years. Things airing on television weren't as tuned to short attention spans as they are today. MTV was one of few channels you could turn to and get involved in as soon as the next video came on. It stood out among the documentaries, sitcoms, old movies, TV dramas, and soap operas that you had to be at least somewhat invested in to watch.
