They are going hard for new customers, they want the ones that spend to feel better than everyone. If you buy Gillet you're better than a wife beater, that's something i guess.

Really, I saw it as pretty pro-male. How is "don't act like a frat boy, be an adult" faulting anyone except immature jackasses?
I'm guessing they were counting on the response. It certainly is getting them a lot of free press.

Because it implies men are those stereotypes. Most men aren't frat boys so shouldn't have these pinned on them.
Imagine a similar advert telling blacks to stop shooting each other and being bad absent fathers.
They just want to sell their overpriced razors and using a subject they really don't give a shit about. If they did they would have had a history of it so it's also dishonest

I don't think it does at all. Do you think ads that encourage people to drink responsibly imply that everyone is a drunk? I don't understand why a message like "don't be an asshole, real men are responsible people" gets under people's skin so much.

It would look nearly the same. Women bad mouthing each other on social media, maybe talking how cute they think underage celebrities are such as how it was with Justin Beiber, maybe women fighting over some guy outside of a club. But it would be a Tampax ad and it would be like "We could do better, ladies"

It was mostly like, men behave badly/harmfully in certain ways that are easily fixable by other men stepping in instead of turning a blind eye (catcalling, physical violence, letting them misbehave because "boys will be boys", etc.). It somehow implied that if you...buy Gillette(?) you'll somehow be fixing the problem. That's where these private companies kinda fall flat.
You can make all the observations about society you want in a 30 second commercial, your main goal as a company to sell as much of your product as you possibly can, so it's all kind of just an attempt to grab market share by capitalizing on pretending to care about social injustices. Don't get me wrong, it's better than doing nothing or perpetuating shitty behavior, but it's not a particularly meaningful push to improve the world.

I'm not sure what you think a hypothetical "women's version" would look like or why that matters. Aren't you always the one throwing up your hands and lamenting that the modern world has gone crazy? Now you're crying about an ad portraying a positive image of masculinity like it's some kind of affront to common decency? Do you think bullying and womanizing is an integral part of masculinity?
I'm genuinely confused how "be a better person" is a controversial statement to some people.

@956,722 (Kook !!rcSrAtaAC) > I think that we only criticize certain groups. Also criticizing your customers is bad business.
Did you feel personally targeted by ads suggesting you might feel "not so fresh" occasionally? To you feel insulted for all the people who don't impress their blind date with wintergreen fresh breath or nail the job interview because they stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night? Advertisers constantly want people to associate their products with the good things in life. I don't think anything different is happening here.
The implication that men should stand up for people being victimized isn't anything radical. I grew up watching much more heavy-handed messaging about how real men always strive for fairness and justice and stand up for the underdog to ensure everybody gets a fair shake - that was in everything from Superman TV shows to John Wayne movies. The commercial we're discussing is pretty fucking tame in comparison. And it's corporate fucking messaging. It's designed as advertising to sell a product to people who might want it. I don't think society is going to fall apart because some guys are encouraged to be responsible and keep their hands to themselves. I'm certainly not going to be mad at Gilette for wanting to appeal to men who want to be looked up to because of those qualities.
