Was it broken down or illegally parked?

You should have nailed your wheels to the ground so they couldn't tow it!

I suspect OP is on a mission to retrieve his car. I once had my BMW towed and it was because the DMV sticker was non existent - It was STOLEN
To get my car back I had to rent a car and go to DMV to get a replacement sticker and then go to the tow yard and retrieve my car. Time which included returning the rental car was about 3/4 of a working day.
Sticker is now covered in lots of Clear Epoxy. Any attempt at stealing it will now require a jack hammer.

Illegally parked. I was parked at a friend's office and was going to have a drink with her, but then a meeting was cancelled and I ended up having too many and took a Lyft home. She assured me no one ever towed cars away from the parking lot!

What did it cost you to get it back.

She offered to help pay, but I said no because there were signs posted that cars could be towed and it's my fault. Maybe she'll give me some weed or buy me some drinks next time, idk.
I am going to present the bill to the board of directors of the meeting that got cancelled and tell them I should be reimbursed!

Now if they could take hot dog and turn it into a pink paste and form little breaded hot dog nuggets that are fried... that I could get behind.

That is a pretty good idea. It's a pity you've chosen to waste such a brilliant mind studying law when you could be truly helping the world by designing new fast food sides.
