My monitor is a brand new Samsung SyncMaster; nothing in my computer is off-brand, including the video card. The only way higher quality would make a difference was if I got an IPS panel instead of a TN, which wouldn't solve the dilemma of god-awful HDMI.

Well, HD is lower resolution. I couldn't get mine to look good either. Probably just need to use a lower resolution when using HDMI.
I just use VGA. I have a Samsung too. Two actually, 23inch that's not being used and my monster 40inch.
Once I get my own place I'll let that be a tv again, until then it's my huge fucking monitor.
