Well I read the story. It seems that a lady and her kids died because her sister was indifferent to their starvation. The husband of the mean lady was not indifferent, but did not know of the problem early enough, and had to see their pile of bodies. Now he has to go home to his cunt of a wife.

With horrible infant mortality rates, they had to toughen up any surviving spawn

I take it as the mother and her kids just accepted their death?

In case anyone wanted to know what book I am reading this from.
This is the one (though the actual cover is less red, more maroon), but I found it at Costco of all places.
I am really glad I got this book since a lot of the stories are ones that I never heard of before. The shorter stories seem to be the most interesting ones like The Nail and God's Food.
A Jew Among Thorns was something else though.

The Three Black Princess, I get the feeling they were describing African slaves.

What the fuck was that?
So the rich brother got jealous of his poor brother getting these gifts from the King that he tried to hire murderers to kill him but they only ended up putting him into a sack hanging from a tree where the poor now rich brother fooled some student into letting him go and entering the sack.
That's definitely an interesting story.
