Topic: Is it worth getting a tablet nowadays?

Anonymous A started this discussion 7 years ago #81,737

I could see why it might be worth it if you want a portable device with a larger screen beyond that of even the largest smartphones, but nowadays it seems like the largest screen a smartphone can offer suffices to a point where tablets are going to be obsolete.

The reason why I ask is that I'm thinking of getting a fairly cheap though not dirt poor cheap tablet for use in bed. It seems like a decent thing to put me to sleep.

I have a 10" tablet that I use to read books and play silly word games. Even the dirt cheap tablets will run a browser, ereader, and play videos pretty well. It's not very useful as something to carry around with me, but it's nice around the house and while lying in bed.

A couple. I've been using an old Samsung Galaxy for a while, and I have an old Lenovo and some cheapy RCA tablets. I had one that was some weird Chinese brand I'd never heard of before. If you're just planning on using it to YouTube surf in bed or something, I wouldn't spend too much. Also, the sound always sucks on tablets for some reason. It's nothing that can't be fixed with headphones, but a lot of them end up with speakers in weird places pointing in the wrong direction.

There was a cheap RCA tablet at Wal-Mart during Black Friday that used to be an item that had lines for in the store, but this year nobody gave a shit about it so they went untouched by the masses. I almost picked one up since it seems like even that could suffice, but should the fact that nobody wanted it on one of the busiest shopping days of the year be a warning sign?

Having used tablets, laptops, and phones in bed for many years I can say this is NOT how it works. The smart thing is to keep all electronic shit at least 10 feet away from your bed at all times. You just end up staying up later and later (even if you put that gay thing on that makes the screen yellow at night).

I think tablets have the same utility they've always had. Nothing's changed. The iPad was basically just a really big iPhone in 2010 and it's still... a really big iPhone. I personally love tablets, they're the absolute best for reading. I think 8" is the sweet spot - small enough to comfortably hold one-handed, but large enough to read comfortably.

Some of them are just getting ridiculous. I think I'm actually in the minority because I wish phones were smaller. I think 4" screen (like first-gen iPhone size) is the right size. Phones should be easily pocketable.

No. It's a sign that pretty much everyone who wants a tablet now has one. Once you have one there's no reason to buy another unless yours either breaks or becomes so obsolete it can't run Chrome/YouTube anymore.

The RCA Vikings aren't horrible. The older ones from 2-3 years back had shitty displays that you could only see from one angle, but they fixed that with the newer versions. I had a Viking Pro that came with Lollipop on it that I used for two years or so without much of a complaint. They put a bunch of ports (HDMI, USB, micro USB) on them. You can plug in mice, external keyboards, monitors, flash drives, or whatever. I never found a good reason to do that, but it's kind of fun. They are a bit of a headache if want to try to flash recovery or install anything new on to them. The batteries they come with aren't great and are difficult to replace. They all seem to have a bargain quadcore and look like they're really trying to be a laptop. For just playing around or watching stuff they are pretty amazing for the price.

Mobile devices put me to sleep. Especially if there's an app where I just move my fingers on the screen.

I've never played with those specifically. Maybe see if there's a display model in the store you can play with? Might give you a better idea of if it will meet your needs.

It's not exactly the kind of model that gets put on display. Not at Wal-Mart. And this tablet was on sale during Black Friday for $28. Not sure if it's worth it to be honest if it's marked that low, but surely it suffices for basic shit.
