He was the last "good" republican president in that he was fairly moderate on social issues and willing to make practical compromises. The main war he involved us in had some reasonable justification and ended pretty quickly.

Yeah, lying about taxes and a war to protect US oil interests were pretty much the highlights of his presidency. It's fun to think back on how Republicans used to not care about immigration because it provided a near endless pool of cheap labor.

It bothers me too. I agree wholeheartedly. Also the same for John McCain.
I do get the sense in the Trump era that that GOP establishment – the Romney/Bush/McCain type neoconservative Republicans – have been rehabilitated because while they may have started a couple of pointless wars in the Middle East and killed a bunch of people, and eroded civil liberties with the PATRIOT Act and mass surveillance, at least they didn't try to do anything really evil like enforce immigration law or protect the American border.

Realistically Trump and the neocons are about equally authoritarian. Trump never (as far as I know) claimed to be a libertarian and indeed he's a decadent statist by Ron Paul standards. He's a populist.

@943,263 (K) > Republicans used to not care about immigration because it provided a near endless pool of cheap labor.
This worked for the owners of businesses but not the workers. Labor is subject to the same rules of supply and demand as any other good or service, especially unskilled labor. I don't think Trump really cares about immigration either way but he saw a pent-up, unmet demand for immigration restriction and seized the opportunity. No one else campaigning for president was offering this in any meaningful way.
What I find interesting is that Trump is actually coming at the immigration issue from almost a Marxist perspective: Mexico is the reserve army of labor.
You know what's weird though: you never hear stories about sweatshop labor anymore. Like how Nike and Apple were making their stuff in hellhole sweatshops to the point where Foxconn had to install anti-suicide nets on the factory roof and kids making sneakers were exposed to toxic chemicals and unsafe machinery. What happened? Did they fix working conditions? (certainly possible) It's just weird this has fallen completely off the radar.

Yep. The GOP in the 90s pretty much saw that. The Libertarian Party in the 90s was embracing open borders and welcoming anyone.
> I don't think Trump really cares about immigration either way but he saw a pent-up, unmet demand for immigration restriction and seized the opportunity.
That's what scares me. I don't think he gives a shit about anything except finding a way to blame someone else for problems. He confuses complaining about things with solving problems. Illegal immigration has been on a steady decline since 2007, so it wasn't a huge issue that needed to be tackled when he ran. It still isn't. Trump and friends were just able get everyone to pretend it was suddenly a big deal by stoking the same old fears and repeating the same old stories that people have been saying about immigrants forever. As fun as it is to pretend that we are under attack by a caravan of people who will come in and be handed a bundle of free cash while taking our jobs while simultaneously living off our welfare, spreading disease, committing crime, overpopulating our cities, etc. - that boogeyman just doesn't exist. It never has. It's the same story told about immigrants everywhere, and people are eager to believe it when times are tough.
What scares me about Trump is he can't identify the real problems from problems that "feel" real to him because they get him cheers from crowds.
