I found a 2000 BMW 3 series 328i fairly cheap, in good condition, and the insurance company will most likely insure me. it's in Ohio, but I'm ignoring that for now.

I also found a 2001 Range Rover in immaculate condition for a good price, and I'll most likely be insured in it as well.

I'm torn between a small car which will look nice, get me into the luxury car club, and drive me around at high speeds if the need arises; and a large SUV which, while not being the fastest or most luxury car in the world, will be able to take anything I throw at it whilst still being nice and lovely. On Top Gear, they took one across Bolivia and it went well.

I don't do much heavy-hauling, off-roading, mudding, or outdoor activity, so that's what is holding me off from the Range Rover. But what if I do? Or what if I need to pull an ambulance out of a ditch? Then the SUV might be necessary. The sedan is just pretty and that's it.

They get like 40MPG, good as a hybrid. But they go 0-60 in 12 seconds.

Ironically the electric ones go 0-60 in 6 seconds.

When I get the money I might get one. Problem is the dealerships are spread pretty thin. Two dealerships near me and both an hour away.

So basically, I go to a club at the beach last night called Seacrets, and I'm there with a buddy of mine. This girl walks up to us and starts chatting with us. She says that she's got another 7 girl friends on the way and that we should all hang out. She says that they're going out on their yacht tomorrow, and that she'd really like us to come. We get completely wasted last night and she gives me her number and tells me to call her so we can meet up. At this point, I'm thinking this is almost too fucking easy, and I might wake up missing a damn kidney or something. But I spent the day on a yacht with a bunch of chicks and had a really great time.

Between me and my friend, we spent about $250 on alcohol. By 3 am, I was fine. My friend was completely fucked up. Long story short, I take a cab home and he stays at our new friends' place. Problem is, he doesn't really stay there. He blacks out, walks about 20 blocks further away from our hotel, passes out on a random third story patio (and is lucky whoever lives there didn't call the cops), wakes up with no shoes, and then proceeds to walk 70 blocks back to the hotel in his socks. It's been a crazy couple of days.

I've heard the same thing, but the Top Gear team took one across Bolivia and it was the most reliable car they had. I know that's no indication of quality, but it was very surprising given the reputation of Range Rovers.

Land Rovers are resilient, Range Rovers are for trophy wives to take their kids to school.

BMWs are expensive to fix, but the 3 series has been a great car for a long time, I'd also look at Audi A4s and the last generation of Acura TSXs and TLs (what I have) if you want an inexpensive sport sedan.

I know that's what the new Range Rovers are mostly for, but what about the older ones (pre-2002)? They look much less pretentious and more like actual off-roading things. Or are the pre-2002 Range Rovers just less-posh trophy wife cars?

The BMW seems to be in great condition, and I don't often hear of problems with BMW's other than the window motors.The 3 series especially seem reliable. My only worry is, on the listing, there are only two interior pictures: The driver door and a tiny picture of the backseat. What I can see looks alright, but there's no telling the condition of the rest of it.

Audi A4s are decently priced and rather reliable from what I've heard, and my friend's is a great ride. I just don't want to seem like a copycat of him with that.

A carfax report will tell you all you need to know about a car mechanically, Cars.com often has those linked right from the listing. Ask for more pictures if you can't see enough to be comfortable.

It depends on the model, to my knowledge the defender was the only real rover sold anytime recently. Take into account mileage more than model year, and I'd stay under 75k if you can for reliability's sake. I spent forever researching the car I wanted when I was 16. Edmund's is helpful for reviews, especially from year to year within the same model.

Mechanically, both the BMW and the Range Rover have clean Carfax reports and whatnot, so that doesn't seem too much an issue.

The BMW has 151K miles, and the range Rover has 130K. That isn't too great :/

Both are terrible.
You are buying by brand, which means you are going to pay a huge markup for a car.
If im not mistaken, you didn't even have a license until a few months ago...You should think of something more responsible, and newer. The older the car, the more money you will dump into repairs.

Also, why do you want to buy a car in another state, Your best bet for a good deal is to look in your own state first. In some states you have to have the car re-titled if its from out of state, which will require a Vehicle Inspection for smog, safety, and road-worthiness. Also, if you buy the car from a dealer out of state, you might have to pay taxes twice, Sales tax and registration in one state, then when you transfer the title to a different state, you have to pay the registration tax again.

There are a few RHD cars in America! My father found a RHD Mini at a dealership about 3 miles away. It didn't have AC or any sort of amenities, but it existed!

Its had some work done to pass smog, which can be as simple as some exhaust work like O2 sensors, or catalytic converters, or serious work like a complete valve job.
been up for action 3 times, only sold twice.
Its had 6 owners, the last either being a private seller, who bought the car at auction, or a mass seller, who buys and sells cars in bulk.

Either way, I would recommend you have someone inspect it before you buy it.

Smog check is
1) God damn engine light to go off, hard because smog check people can force it to go on
2) Smog check people need to find all these part numbers on your car and if they don't see it, then they won't pass you even if you show them after the test where it is
3) Actual emmissions, which is so fucking easy to force the car to pass.

Some people will put in all the anti-smog parts for the test, get passed, then take them out so their car pollutes but gets better gas mileage after the test is over.

Most work is just maintenance, Serious work can be pretty bad depending on what was damaged. The only bad work I stay away from is when a vehicle has been repaired after a serious accident, Metal gets bent, things get flooded and parts of inferior quality get used.

I would leave it on the table for sure, but I wouldn't necessarily advise you on setting your heart on any particular car. Keep your eyes open, there is always something nicer out there if you are willing to look hard enough. Eventually you will find a car that you just cannot live without, and usually thats the car you should really scrutinize and have checked from top to bottom before you start negotiating. It sure has saved me from buying a few lemons.

Alright, that seems like sage advice. I might see if my dad wants to go look around at dealerships tomorrow or Sunday so I can get sort of a feel of what's available in my own town. There are a few gems, but they're hard to find around here. I could always go with him on a business trip to a bigger city and look at some of the dealerships there, as well.

I'm so torn between an SUV or a sedan. I know a sedan is much more to my personality, but there's just something about SUV's that attracts me. Anyway, thank you for helping.

Yeah, stay away from wrecked cars and used car dealerships. The dealerships that sell new and used cars usually have the cars that are in the best shape, New tires, complete car checkup and so on, but you will always pay a higher price for the same car that you could have bought from a private seller. In reality, the benefit of buying from a reputable dealership is the peace of mind.

The only thing keeping me german is family tradition. Specifically, tradition calls for Mercedes-benz. I'm willing to veer slightly off that though for more german brands.

If I'm honest, I know very little about BMW. Mercedes do have great interior from what I know, though. Especially the early 2000 models as they have real leather as opposed to the new models which have fake shit :/

They're both high in miles, which I'm worried about. The BMW has 151K miles, whilst the Benz has 170K. They're both in good condition though, with the Benz seeming to be in the best condition. It had about 100 photos on the listing, whilst the BMW only had about 5 and only one is of the interior (a small photo of the backseat). The BMW is about 3.5K currently (on auction), whilst the Benz is 6K (on buy it now/make an offer). It got lowered earlier today from 7K.
I guess we should also take into account they're both quite a distance away, whilst the Mini is down the street.
