The joke being that by the time Cathy makes a decision not only will Black Friday be over, but the router will be obsolete and no longer available from Comcast and she'll have to start the whole process over.

These routers are practically impervious to malware.

I can't wait till they have IoT enabled smart routers that upload all your woodworking to Facebook and get Russian malware that leaks all your wifi network traffic to Moscow and/or Beijing.

No, your router will have firmware to monitor the motor speed, internal battery charge, settings, and temperature... that you will have to license from year to year. We'll make altering that firmware void your warranty, carry the possibility of making your router non-functional, and open you up to legal action. That's the only way we can ensure that companies can ensure the continued quality of the products. Companies that don't make a yearly profit from each tool they --sell-- lease out will eventually get bought out and making your own tools will turn into an edgy techno-fetishist hobby that people like Cory Doctorow can write stories about.

Routing as a Service is gonna be yuuuge! ??? It's just so much more convenient to subscribe to a router on an annual basis than to pay all that money to buy one and worry about having to replace it if it breaks in five years. This way you can make sure you get access to all the latest bits.

I'd also like to see battery powered routers and not with rechargeable lithium ion but proprietary alkaline batteries with a DMCA-protected microchip and they sell you the router for $9.99 but the batteries cost $39.99 each and are good for about three feet of wood.
