Topic: Riddle me this..

Stupid local news blabbering all kinds of blah blah stuff Re: Thanksgiving day weekend..

One thing that irks me...They keep mentioning about how busy interstates are going to be sooo crowded because 11,214,653(not their number) are going to be traveling for the holiday..

Just how do they get that number...it is impossible for them to know that..

It's a projection. You can read the full AAA press relsease here. They collaborated with INRIX, an automative data analytics company. Based on factors presumably like relative strength of the economy, gas prices, mass transit reliability, and historical data, they make a good guess as to how many people will travel by car this week.

It's just about as far away from being "out of their ass" as humanly possible, but yeah I guess that's a good way to put it.

Idk! I would guess they have vehicle monitoring software of some kind plus maybe some survey data on how people say they traveled.

No like phone apps that track GPS (think Google maps/Waze but proprietary for ground based shipping companies that put a lot of cars and trucks in the road) and similar things on the vehicle itself.

how does the number of shipping vehicles correlate to number of families traveling on turkey day?

It just gives them a sense of the flow of traffic along major highways, which they maybe have some models for using that information to estimate total # of cars in the road within a reasonable margin of error. That's what my guess would be but I don't work for them and I didn't evwn know they even existed before a couple hours ago so idk.

Yea lots of cameras - Where I live they have live video feeds of each major intersection. 100% coverage. Airlines with advanced ticket reservations of course make it easy to see if there are more customers now than last year. 100% of them have to travel to the airport.

Amazon adds data now with AI because when people order 2 day delivery items and those items are for travel - No lack of data to predict the roads going to be horrid.

I dunno, thatd track commercial traffic which is scheduled so doesnt fluctuate the same way normal traffic does

And i was wondering specifically what the data and models are
I assume they publish it

I just meant like, let's say shipping a product from City A to City B on a Wednesday usually takes X hours but it takes X+5 hours instead on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. That means there is 5 hours of additional traffic which they'd feed into an algorithm or whatever along with other info and you'd get a result at the end.

Also I doubt they make this stuff publicly available because their whole business is selling this information to interested private companies/governments. AAA paid them something for this data after all!

In a lot of places there are traffic cameras and/or sensors built into the roads and highways. The built in sensors are just electronic versions of the older systems where you lay an air hose across the street. The sensors do literally count each car that passes over and they get a good estimate of it's speed. These systems are used year round to give real time data about traffic conditions. In urban areas you'll see them all over because the data gets integrated into traffic light timing systems. In more rural areas they may just need them on highway entrance and exit ramps.

Yes, in a lot of cases they are actually counting cars.

And as shocking as it may be. Every year more cars always more and more cars.

What about things being pulled behind cars?
