How marriage works: A union between two people. It is not created by the state or the church. There were marriages before the Christian religion was established (I will focus on Christianity here, since it is the majority religion in the US. Feel free to substitute it with the faith of your choosing), hence it is a covenant between two individuals and God.

Marriage, until recently in human history, was frequently polygamous and a means for a single powerful male to claim multiple desirable females. Eventually, the church decided that it liked money so it banned the whole multiple spouses thing. This meant that the wealthy could not claim many spouses and would be less likely to produce an eligible heir. Guess where the money and land went if nobody could claim it?
So now, you have your happy male-female family unit which was created and maintained by greed[ 1 ]. Many Christians themselves would know this if they cared enough about their faith to learn its history. Hell, I don't even have to go into the >50% attrition rate of this contract. When was marriage ever sacred?

So, eventually in the States we'll allow for civil unions, or state marriages or some kind that allow two people of any gender to enjoy the same rights and benefits of any other couple. And Marriages will continue to be performed by churches and they can have any silly little exclusionary rule they want, because their opinions don't affect the legal rights of free citizens. And all the bawwing in the world can't stop that eventuality.

It wouldn't. Some people just feel the need to legislate their morality, and some politicians just need a emotional hot-button non-issue to talk about in order to pander to the religious right for votes.
