Weapons are either dropped randomly, given through achievements, or crafted (recipes involving other items).
They aren't reskins, they generally have additional positive and negative aspects.

The unlockable weapons have different functionality from the default weapons, but generally fill the same roles. When you use one of them, you are making a trade-off; it may have more damage, but have slower rate of fire, as an example.
