@OP
I have a friend who sleeps very little (not more than 6 hours max unassisted by medicine). He tries to tire himself out by going to the gym and other activities but it rarely works. The only thing that helps (besides medication) is alcohol and boy let me tell you. He can drink some alcohol. The other day he woke to find he drank 21 beers in a single setting. The funny thing is he doesn't need it to cope and is puzzled by his lack of dependence. Usually he days he just likes the taste but I am guessing he has some kind of void he is trying to fill with the drink.

Well tell your "friend" dependence sneaks up on you, he'll be dependent long before he's ready to admit it, or maybe before he even realizes it.

I think my "friend" is waiting for the let down and enjoying the ride (even if it is circling the drain).

Eh whatever man. I didn't take good advice when people gave it to me either lol. Enjoy the ride. ;)
Drinking nightly isn't that big of a deal, its when you're waking up to a bottle... then shit gets real.

Yeah my friend woke up the last couple days, not hung over but thirsty, oh so very thirsty.

One day your friend may wake up to find that the drinking that started as a fashionably self-destructive hobby to make life a little more bearable has become a requirement for day-to-day functioning.
Seriously, tell your "friend" to enjoy a bit of crazy time, but take a vacation from the drink once in a while to prove you still can. Finding something to do that keeps you interested outside of being in a stupor is the key to filling that void, but many never find anything because it's difficult to really look for something to fill it while drunk.

Life is so much easier and entertaining when you're drunk. You soberists wouldn't understand.

Oh believe me, I agree.

LOLno. Seriously, I spent about a year where waking up to vomiting blood and polishing off most of a bottle of vodka to take care of the shakes was a normal morning. I still drink occasionally, but I know it's an easy road to head down unwittingly if you have a lot of time of your hands.
