Topic: I don't know if I deserve to fucking vote.

Catherine !ttGirlsPl2 started this discussion 7 years ago #80,178

Externally hosted imageI'm never an informed voter and whenever reading about propositions the descriptions are so confusing that it is difficult to contemplate the long-term consequences of such a vote. I rarely keep up with my local politicians and city officials. I think I was suckered into the system in 2008 just because I wanted to be a part of electing history. I'm a fucking idiot who has often times forgot to vote in elections and gets too focused on other shit like school or some online bullshit to even bother reading up on the important matters. I'm the very reason why I am starting to think votes should only be given to informed people who are qualified to make such decisions. Maybe the ancient people had it right.

Fucking Prop. 6 and 10 annoy the shit out of me since one of them claims it affects homeowners which I am not since I live in an apartment complex. I know you could just leave some of these blank on the ballot, but that feels like a wasted vote and I feel obligated to at least choose a side.

I honestly felt tempted a couple of times to throw away a couple of votes by writing in "Sprite" or "Not Sure."

Voting is WAY TOO MUCH PRESSURE!!!

I've voted down party lines before (even though I declined to state upon registration), but when your state is one where you might have two Democrats on the ballot and no Republicans (or any third party members for that matter) then voting down party lines doesn't make much sense.

@Cathy
At least you care enough to care. There are people voting who don't bother to even worry about such things.

A little light searching should turn up some discussion on the ballot. Plenty of organizations publish voting guides with recommendations and arguments for positions on certain ballot issues. I would say go over a sample ballot and try to look up some of the stuff you're not sure about. (I was actually just doing this for local judges appearing on my ballot) Maybe a California LGBT organization has something to say about a particular Associate Justice's appointment to the California Supreme Court or some way of looking at a regional issue that you might not have thought of before. You don't have to take a deep dive into the political and economic history of central valley water management in order to vote up or down on Prop. 3. Even voter guides published by people you generally disagree with can be handy if you are looking for reasons not to support something.

Don't get discouraged if you're not sure about an issue. Don't get discouraged if you just don't fucking care about an issue. It's a big state with a lot of people in it and not every issue is your issue. At least go to vote about the things you do care about.

I already marked a few things in my sample ballot. I think Prop. 6 was some gas tax which I wanted to vote to repeal, but I have no idea if that is a yes or no vote because of how it's worded.

Actually, not sure why it slipped my mind to look for LGBT affirming candidates. I think a chairperson of a local LGBT group up here is running for city council so I might actually have one of two votes for that category. They helped me out in the past so I might as well return the favor and send a vote their way.

I did a quick Google search for LGBT supporting candidates and this list popped up. It appears that I would more or less have to vote Democrat (not surprising, to be honest) and I already marked most of these people in my sample ballot except for Liuentent Governor since she is running against another Democrat. Also, what the fuck? There are only two Republicans running for District 8 Representative. I don't know jack shit about Paul Cook or Tim Donnelly and the list doesn't list them has having any LGBT endorsements.

I'm not sure if this is the same in other states, but in California, you might have a position like "United States Representative District 8" where the candidates are both Republicans (in this case Paul Cook seeking re-election and Tim Donnelly). "Lieutenant Governor" has only two Democrats campaigning for it and no Republicans. I like that this is a thing as it encourages people to look into them more, but the unfortunate truth is that I might not be one of those people who looks into them more which leads me to think if I deserve a vote.

Honestly, I think I know what I might do for now on. I think it might benefit my best interests to just vote for LGBT supporting candidates or the political party that usually supports LGBT rights (usually the Democrats it seems), because honestly, right now that seems to be the only issue that concerns me right now.

LOL I had an old guy to tell me to vote for Donald Trump the other day. I wouldn't want to be the poll worker who gets to explain to him why Donald Trump isn't on the ballot, but I'm pretty sure you're just as qualified to have an opinion as that guy.

Also just because someone is pro on Gender Bending/Role/Playing - Does that make them qualified to solve political problems.

Yes on 6 is to repeal the gas tax

Syntax replied with this 7 years ago, 4 minutes later, 10 hours after the original post[^] [v] #933,571

It is a difficult decision.

Choice is simple - Yes means Gas goes back to cheaper BUT Roads remain full of pot holes and bridges may fall apart at any moment.

Poor people will be able to save a few pennies per gallon YET end up with more car repair costs because of road damage and a bridge falling on them makes for health care costs

People like me want a smoooooth ride so I will be voting to keep the gas costs high WHICH IS MY NO VOTE

I do feel bad about making it hard on the poor.

I don’t buy the arguments made by pro gas tax people. California has tons of tax revenue. They can just better manage their budget instead of raising taxes.

You may not be aware of history of California roads. People on East Coast were told California roads were paved with Gold.

They came out via wagon trains and dug up all the Gold and left us with Potholes

I was going to say that in UK there really is not all that much to drive2 near ya but then I did this and damn ya ain't as big as California but close enough

Ah then again the prime reason to hold on2 Falklands has to do with offshore drilling rites which of course remain in dispute

They should be improving the desert communities since those are growing and would likely provide the state with added income.

Perhaps you are unaware that Water in California is becoming a scarce item. North of me they are now turning Ocean a Blue water into drinkable
Cost is $One Billion and accounts for 7% of total San Diego county water
All we need is perhaps $250 Billion for future to provide enough water for desert people

Cath this is important. You need to either vote Republican and help your country continue on it's amazing recovery, or not vote at all.

You currently have the best chance at being employed, for more money, than ever before.

It's not people shifting to the right. It's the Dems shifting so far left they are leaving people behind! The #walkaway movement would be good for you to look into.
