Yes but I don't think it's as good as Office. You can get free Word alternatives that are on par though.

Not really. It fails on more complex files produced by Microsoft Office, and it lacks in certain tasks. Plus the usability is pretty terrible.

Close to me and even in walking distance is UCSD (University of California San Diego)

Students find legal MS releases of Office on a Students 2003 disk. $10 US

For a more updated MS Word with proof of student ID Word 2010 (Academic) $50 and it can be loaded on 3 PC's

So what they do is to per dorm floor, set up a network just for communal use of one word program and the one is used for three dorm floors. Cost spit is a few bucks per user.

They changed from one standard to a new one for the sole purpose of making the main open source alternative to their product seem less capable. Damage done, obviously, but the work is being done to be fully compatible again.

Ironically, Open Office is actually compatible with more documents created in Microsoft Office than the newer Microsoft Office is. Microsoft dropped support for older documents, while Open Office retains the functionality.

I have always dreamed of Office having a more better Grammar checker and each Office release I discover it ain't no better at fixing up my Dyslexic English any more better then versions One decade old.
