She is in a home with retards. That's basically the 21st century equivalent of ending up in the poor-house. "Here you go negroid Ebony support worker, take my freedoms away and impose an unreasonable curfew on my ways of life."
And here's the sad thing: she isn't even a retard, so it's a completely inappropriate placement. She's socially retarded, yes, she's emotionally retarded, oh hell yes, with all the callousness of a serial killer, but she fails on one criterion: intellectual retardation. Why waste 4 years getting a Bachelor's degree in literature (or whatever it was, I'm too drink-addled to remember) only to surround yourself with people by far your intellectual inferior? Am I just overestimating the difficulty of literary degrees? Or is Harriet genuinely selling herself short?
I say this in the most well-meaning way possible: get out of the retard home and find your own place, even if it's as the roommate of some eccentric nerd who steals all of your food and lacks temperance and virtue ala Walter.
