We had an elderly woman at work whose foot went gangrenous. They wouldn't operate because they said that she probably would never survive the procedure. Her foot went black and hard and shiny and cold. We were all warned to be careful when touching her foot because her toes could fall off. One day, I found a piece of chicken bone and colored it shiny and painted it black with a marker. I then put it it a specimen cup and left it on the admissions woman's desk. When she picked up the cup and asked about it's contents, I informed her that Mr.s P had finally dropped a toe. She started screaming and threw everything that she was holding into the air. It was so funny.

I'm pretty sure this is the heroin-alternative they are talking about: Cooked at home from iodine and over-the-counter codeine pain pills. People just sort of let their bodies rot away due to failed organs and lack of circulation. They die within a about year, usually. Cool stuff.
