Sergey Savitsky, a Russian scientist working at a remote Antarctic research station, has been accused of the attempted murder of his co-worker Oleg Beloguzov at Bellingshausen station on King George Island. The living situation at the remote station had reportedly been tense between the two men over the past six months. The tension finally exploded when Savitsky plunged a kitchen knife into the chest of his fellow scientist earlier this October. Among the reasons Savitsky cited for the violent incident, was that his co-worker kept revealing the endings of books he was reading.
The injured Beloguzov was evacuated to a hospital in Chile, and Savitsky has been asked to remain under 'house arrest' at the station until the situation can be resolved.
