What is your stance on: brush pens?

Meta !Sober//iZs joined in and replied with this 7 years ago, 3 hours later[^] [v] #927,618

Against. They're used primarily by the Chinese who are RIPPING US OFF IN TRADE ?

Also why the fuck would you write with a goddamn paint brush when the West has developed superior fountain pen and ballpoint pen technology?

Well, think of it as stealing Chinese technology if it makes you feel better. Besides, taking Chinese technology is a grand tradition. Paper, gunpowder, movable type, etc. You're not a real western power unless you've stolen from the Chinese, and Europe got a huge head start on the US in that game.

I do think the poor should have access to a writing instrument but if there were socialized pens I would recommend a ballpoint

No. I have used felt pens before and I hate the way it feels on paper. I'm weird with writing instruments. I cannot use pencils at all because the feeling of the graphite scraping on the paper is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. I have to use either liquid ink rollerball (I'm quite fond of the Uniball Vision in 0.7mm) or gel (Pilot Precise V5 RT is my favorite). I also like fountain pens a lot. My current daily driver is a purple Zebra Zensation fountain pen (pic related). They're only $4.99 a pack at Office Depot!

Anyway, as far as Pentel goes the only Pentel I've tried is the RSVP which is just a generic forgettable ballpoint. I keep meaning to try the Pentel Energel pens but I never get around to it. Maybe I'll buy one just for you.

Update: I did finally get around to buying a Pentel Energel™. I bought a 2 pack of EnerGel™ RTX™ violet ink, 0.7 mm needle tip, for $3.47 (pic related). It's... okay. The barrel is too fat. The grip is kinda slippery. The ink is really smooth but doesn't feel any smoother than Pilot's gel ink (I really think the Pilot Precise V5 RT is the gold standard of gel pens). This is the only Pentel™ pen I've ever purchased for myself. It's just okay though.

I will give it props for having a metal pocket clip instead of plastic and the purple ink is a nice shade.

I do like the Uniball Eye (we call it Uniball Vision here but it's the same pen). Though only in .7 mm - the .5 mm is a bit too scratchy for my taste.

gel pens take too long to dry
fountain pens are annoyingly scratchy sometimes and sometimes they write too thick
brush pens just look inconvenient
i don't like the sound of those tiny finepoint felt tip pens

rollerball > ballpoint but it's cheaper to get a pack of multi coloured ballpoints than rollerballs

Seriously why can't you wait literally two seconds before touching what you've just written?

Also some are better than others - the new Bic Gelocity (make sure it says Made in Japan on the package - the Made in France ones are the original, mediocre ones with slow drying time) dries very fast. Watch out for the fragile pocket clip though!!

@previous (Captain Kate Carr)
I fixed the Pentel by putting the gel ink cartridge into a Pilot G2 body (the refills are the same size) and I like it a lot better now. In fact I'd say the Energel ink is actually much better than the G2, it's just trapped in a really shitty pen.

Its a trade off
Ballpoints usually require more pressure to write and the ink doesnt flow as easily
Your hand gets tired more quickly because youre continually applying more force
You clearly dont write much or you would know this, thanks

> Seriously why can't you wait literally two seconds before touching what you've just written?
No because you're living a life full of joyous moments and insightful thoughts that you want to scribble down for posterity. You don't want to stop periodically and wait for the ink to dry like some medieval scribe setting his illuminated manuscript out in the evening sun while he patiently ponders God and waits to die.

Even if you're not a lefty, the end of one line can get smudged when you move down and start writing on the next. You don't want to pause for seconds at a time at the end of every line. You want to keep writing and finish your thought. It's distracting.

I'm writing on 8 inch wide paper. I'm writing right handed, from left to right. There is no fucking way you could write 8 inches of text, legibly, in under two seconds for the ink at the beginning of the previous line to not have dried by the time your hand comes back to the left side of the page. It's not happening. Thanks.

Anonymous C replied with this 7 years ago, 16 minutes later, 1 month after the original post[^] [v] #939,981

Sometimes I make lists or diagrams or write columns of numbers too. Sometimes I drag my hand back through the line I just wrote while moving down the the next. I dunno, I'm with trip here. Gel pens are too apt to smudge. I'm glad you find them satisfying. It just baffles me how you manage. Maybe you have cleaner habits than I do regarding keeping your hands off the writing surface.

How are those disposable fountain pens? I saw something about them not too long ago. Does the ink ever dry or clog up on the nib like with other fountain pens?

They're really good. Especially because at only ~$1.25 each you don't have to worry about breaking or losing one.

I haven't had any trouble with ink drying/clogging. You do have to be religious about keeping them capped when not in use, though.

Anonymous C replied with this 7 years ago, 4 minutes later, 1 month after the original post[^] [v] #939,985

Shit, at that price you can buy them and take them to work as bait pens. Wait for people to steal your pens and watch chaos ensue.
