Oh man, bishop-accountability.org is a huge database. A while back, I was contemplating using it to do a Minichan Pedo-Priest of the Day™ thread series with a new priest, photo, backstory, and convictions for each day. There's easily enough material there for a year and more. I get sad when there aren't new stoic thoughts or Lipton® recipes. I thought maybe reading about convicted pedophiles could fill that void.
The sheer amount of rapist priests that have been caught is scary, and there's no reason to assume this kind of thing isn't still going on and being covered up all the fucking time.

An interesting idea out there is that the change in policy some time last century whereby confessions would be applicable to kids (it used to be not because they're kids for pete sake) perhaps in an effort to keep the membership from shrinking, was a bad idea because then the priest hears about how you were feeling your weiner or whatever

With the caveat that the proportion of child abusers in the Catholic clergy is infinitesimally low (how many atheist child abusers have there been?), I believe it's a problem with the fetishizing of 'innocence' that the later Catholic church has insisted on. It wasn't enough that Mary was a virgin, her mother had to be 'pure' too. Children are often depicted as perfectly 'clean' entities, which is silly since children tend to lack a moral compass and are much closer to our primal, unreflective nature than adults. A few evil people are drawn to Catholicism because they think it enables them to sidestep the 'sin' of sexual knowledge by making a perverse sexual fetish of 'purity' and innocence. If there is one thing I could change about Catholic dogma it would be to leave behind the neurotic attitude to sex and spend less time making 'childishness' and 'virginity' and 'innocence' into its own weird kind of passive pornography (think of all the depictions of Mary in Catholic art as a very young girl).

See my above post to Kook about the Catholic church's (misguided in my opinion) fetishizing of 'innocence'. They've taken a normal idea and made it into a neurotic and deeply unhealthy fixation. It never ends well when human impulses are forcefully repressed, they simply appear elsewhere in perverted and corrupted form (i.e child abuse).

To add to my earlier post, there was an Italian priest in the early 70s who murdered some young boys in his town over a space of about a decade and, due to his standing in the community (and in particular due to the time and place, when it would have been unthinkable to suspect a Priest in ultra-religious rural Tuscany), he was able to pin the killings on a local retarded man.
When he was caught he rationalized his actions as "saving the boys from a world of sin", in other words by strangling them (note also his method - in art, strangling is always depicted as the most quasi-sexual of killing methods) he was saving them from being corrupted by the world and thus being denied Heaven when they died naturally.
So again, the Church is a magnet for some disturbed individuals, sadly, and our misguided obsession with 'innocence' is in my opinion one of the reasons.
