I'm guessing that Ryan joined LulzSec and was responsible for the CIA/SOCA DDOSes. LulzSec didn't initally have a botnet (just a few rooted servers for the 2600 attacks), Ryan does. We'll see if the DDoSes continue.

The whole "2011 Census Data Stolen!111" story was not real either, it was The Register that ran the story because they found a pastebin with an ASCII pirate ship (100% proof, right?) from someone pretending to be LulzSec, saying they had stolen it.

The British police are doing what they do best, arresting some kid and making an example of him, in the hope that it will scare everyone else. I'm just disappointed that this guy didn't properly secure his computer. He has been charged now, which means that he has either confessed or a police computer forensics expert has managed to find enough evidence on his computer.If you're running a botnet or generally doing illegal shit, you need to use a decent VPN like http://perfect-privacy.com that doesn't keep logs, and encrypt your fucking hard drive with Truecrypt, storing anything related to illegal activity in a hidden operating system (because the British police and some others can send you to prison if you fail to provide encryption keys).
People like Ryan Cleary never expect the police to do anything. No-one ever does. Just secure your computer and internet connection if you break the law. This kid would have been released without charge by now if he covered his ass properly.

At least if he was actually involved with "Lulzsec" I wouldn't be surprised, in their IRC channel for computer forensics (#secure), they recommend people use full disc encryption with the software Comodo (some shitty closed source garbage probably filled with government backdoors). If Ryan had used Comodo, and refused to provide the encryption keys to police, then he would have been going to prison anyway. However, if he kept everything illegal in a hidden operating system provided by Truecrypt, they wouldn't have been able to prove the existence of it and he couldn't be forced to give the password away. I spoke to Ryan (viraL) on Skype in 2008, over the space of about 2 months. I was conscious of people using packet sniffers to acquire my IP address, so one time he rings me on Skype and I didn't answer. I connected to a VPN and then he called me again. After talking to him for about 5 minutes, he starts reading off the host-names of everyone else in the call (there was me, him and a couple of his buddies, who, judging by their accents were Dutch). Anyway I appear to have annoyed him, he took down the VPN I was using for a few minutes. The VPN only consisted of a couple servers (most do) and he could easily keep it down with the strength of his botnet. His name, address and phone number have been floating around for a long time, I guess after about 3 years of his dox being common knowledge be became fearless and a victim of his own ego. He was behind the Chanapocalypse in 2008 with Pacifico and some other of his clusterfuck friends from Raidchan. The Chanapocalypse was blamed on AnonTalk, and a lot of people (myself included) blasted Kimmo with packets in retaliation, until we realized who was really responsible. Anyway, Ryan is a dickhead and brought all of this on himself. He doesn't know how to interact with people. The fact that he was too pigheaded and operated a botnet with thousands of zombies, without encrypting his hard drive and hiding all the evidence, while his dox were public, demonstrates his idiocy. Yeah, and now there's going to be an internal struggle within the group, because some people want to do something productive and change the world, and other people will say that it's supposed to be strictly for the lulz and that politics and rights movements shouldn't be a part of it. This internal struggle will weaken them, and eventually lead to a fissure/downfall, just like pretty much every other hacker group we've seen.

Yeah, and now there's going to be an internal struggle within the group, because some people want to do something productive and change the world, and other people will say that it's supposed to be strictly for the lulz and that politics and rights movements shouldn't be a part of it. This internal struggle will weaken them, and eventually lead to a fissure/downfall, just like pretty much every other hacker group we've seen.
