Topic: How many of you nerds use private trackers?

Anonymous A started this discussion 7 years ago #78,919

And which are you a member of?

I don't know you, but I don't want anyone tracking my privates.

piracy seems to have dropped in popularity over the last couple of years

Legal streaming services have definitely had an impact, but rates of piracy haven't really fallen as much as people think. The explosion in popularity of private TV/film trackers over the last few years is insane. I love being able to grab pretty much any film or TV show in HD/UHD quality as soon as it's released, as well as ebooks, games and software.

Torrents are still a thing? Is this 2005? Will we ever catch Bin Laden? Are Jean jackets really trending right now?

Don't have any invites at the moment, sorry. I can let you know when I do have some, if you want, as long as you'll be able to keep your ratio up (you'd probably either need a seedbox, or good upload speeds and (ideally) a PC left on and seeding 24/7).

If you want a really good way of getting into decent trackers, there's a tracker called MyAnonymouse (ebooks/audiobooks) which you can easily join through their IRC (instructions); other trackers have application threads in MyAnonymouse's forum, where you can apply for membership. It takes persistence and patience, but eventually you'll build up some really good trackers. That's how I got into the ratioless MTV, which doesn't have an invitation system so you have to hunt for application threads in other trackers.

Only Apollo, but it's been down for a month and currently in limbo. The best music tracker atm is RED, which I'm not a member of but you can do an IRC interview to join.

Why not just buy things???

Why not just steal things online? It’s free, easy, and you’ll never be caught.

Stealing things turns you gay.

Also does anyone remember how people would always say "piracy is a service problem. If you build an easy, unobtrusive way to deliver content, people will pay for it." Turns out I was right and they were all wrong and the actual motivating factor for piracy is people don't want to pay for shit if they can easily get it for free (it has very little to do with how easy it is to get legally).

I think you’re largely correct though. Torrenting is in huge decline with Spotify and Netflix. Most of the big sites are dead now.

I mean, KaZaA and Napster died but that didn't mean piracy decreased. How much of this is just pirates using other forms/mediums vs. piracy actually decreasing?

Big torrent sites like Pirate Bay and Demonoid are gone.

TPB is definitely still up. But even if it weren't, what I'm asking is did all the people who were using that service stop pirating altogther, or did they split up into a bunch of smaller/more niche sites while maintaining the same level of piracy overall?

If only there were an easy, unobtrusive platform that delivered content on par with private trackers!

There is! It's called steam/netflix/spotify

I use Spotify, but Netflix here is shit, with a small library, video quality often far below what piracy can offer, and no (or very limited) offline viewing. Plus, not DLC-free!

So your actual problem is you don't live in the US.

All I have is anecdotal evidence but the days of kids talking about downloading music off LimeWire is gone. Everything is Spotify, iTunes, Hulu, YouTube Red, and Netflix now. Only weirdos and nerds pirate stuff.

I agree as far as music piracy is concerned; it's far easier to use Spotify and listen instantly than to hunt for MP3s to download and transfer to your phone/tablet/whatever. But piracy of TV/films is more popular than ever. It's easy to point to the decline of TPB/KAT/Torrentz2, but we all just moved to other solutions -- private trackers, semi-private trackers (TorrentLeech), streaming sites (123movies, GoMovies, TubePlus, etc.), filehosts like Mega, shit like TeaTV, and so on.
