It doesn't have much to do with the lag, just that loading of chunks might take some longer. And with enough ram (1.5G like has been said over and over) it'll run fine.

Xen gives you much better CPU access than most other VPS packages. You of all people should know the difference between them. I was only trying to help out. This company has been in business for over 10 years, their $60 package is a steal and you just have to deal with yum.

I haven't run a MC server in a while, but I don't believe for a moment that the server software has been so heavily optimized as to only take 200MB of RAM. When I ran servers, it would take up as much as you gave it to use.

I think whatever you are using to report RAM usage is simply wrong. Also, remember that the Windows server you are running on your PC is different than the linux server you will be running on the VPS.

There's a bug that reduces spawn rates to almost nothing if the view distance is set to anything lower than the default of 10.

Perhaps Minecraft hasn't sold the most copies of any game this decade at this point in time, but eventually at the rate it is selling at, it will eclipse most every game in that list. And it just recently left alpha.

Not true, take Black Ops for example. It came out after Minecraft and has sold almost quadruple.

Due to how console games are sold, your example has a short lifespan of explosive sales and then basically nothing. It had a massive budget for advertisments and PR, and they got their payoff in the first weeks after release.
A game like minecraft will have steady sales over the life of the game, as opposed to one giant spike and then nothing; also Mojang has spent no money on advertising so far. None.
Minecraft with an ad campaign (which is coming with the console and handheld releases) will be unstoppable!
