Here we use baseball rules. Pitcher throws the ball. Batter swings at the ball. What counts is - Did the batter hit the ball. The name of the pitcher at that, does not matter.

indeed, that is my understanding -- that smithsonian article makes it seem that people would fear tomatoes because they'd eat it and keel over soon after, and logically blame the tomatoes due to the close timing
