Topic: some study claims that students skip meals to pay for textbooks

Sheila LaBoof started this discussion 7 years ago #78,389

How the fuck is a fiver going to cover a fucking textbook that costs 30 times as much as that

You'd have to skip eating for weeks to get all the books

Syntax joined in and replied with this 7 years ago, 8 minutes later[^] [v] #915,305

I doubt that. Most kids buy their books used on eBay or Amazon now for cheap.

If they’re tech savvy they just pirate a PDF version of it.

They do? How would you know that? Truth is that they do not. You cannot find most academic texts on eBay or Amazon.

Especially when they expect you to have the latest version of the textbook.

I graduated from college 3 years ago. I bought 80% of my textbooks on Amazon and eBay.

I graduated college a few years ago and my textbooks are in foreign languages no one wants to read.

Was this "study" a survey done for a company that sells online course materials?

Crusty old geriatric is my dads middle name. Family photo albums are labeled X rated and partly because the pages are stuck together with crust.

Old man? You confuse me with my dad, who's body is riddled with strange diseases. He once was in the oil business but lets not get into dinner subjects, that make others puke.

Why don't they just get an ebook reader and download the books

Oh also some i cant find in pdf because they're hella niche

Language books are good to have a physical copy of and you need those from day 1, cant wait for long ass shipping times

I had one book that cost $70, looked it up on Amazon and most listings were $140. Found one for $40 but it was sold by a third party thru Amazon and estimated shipping would be between September 27 and October 16...

Plenty of textbooks don't even have ebook or PDF versions. My uni provided most of my textbooks, and I'm lucky programming textbooks are almost always around as PDFs somewhere, but good luck finding Comprehensive Medicinal Chemistry LXIX in ebook form!

That isn't it. :( I picked Comprehensive Medicinal Chemistry III™ because it's a 4,500+ page book that costs anywhere from £3-5k. I would be SHOCKED if it were freely available in PDF form online. At that sort of price, the "ebook" version is normally viewed through some proprietary software to prevent copying, because the stakes are too high to risk unauthorised distribution.

how did we allow wondrous technological advancement to make textbooks become a gigantic pain in the ass

used to be, the main problem was you'd feel some strain carrying a shitload of freshly bought textbooks

now you've got all this electronic proprietary bullshit to fuck around with instead of simply spreading the book open

I know, right? We used to pirate textbooks by having the professor put the textbook on reserve in the school library and taking advantage of the cut rate the library gave students for using the copy machines.

We mostly just made copies of the assigned problems, because that was the only thing that would change from edition to edition. But for a few cents per page, you could photocopy the whole damn thing for less than half the cost of the actual book.

Well fuck, that's surprising, I should've found an actual example. Plenty of textbooks I've hunted for to no avail.
