I feel like a lot of what was amazing about Undertow was that it hit public awareness at just the right time. The rough bass guitar sawing through a lot of the tracks was really powerful in an era when the grunge and pop that was leading the scene was starting to go acoustic. Tool's rougher sound opened some doors for metal to remain in the mainstream when it was being drowned out by softer music.
