Compassion is a part of being human. Compassion emphasizes the experience of suffering with those who suffer. It inflicts it's knifelike pain only on those who, strong or not, brave or not, intelligent or not, have been granted the horrible gift of looking the world full in the face and seeing it as it is.

Not true. I think compassion is learned at a young age.
Many people don't learn it at all because they were raised on computers, and with minimal human contact.
And many people lose it through trauma.

I believe in the good nature of the human spirit. Call me an idealist, but I think everyone has a natural sense of empathy despite their terrible upbringings. I don't think there's any excuse for being awful to people just because you 'learned things wrong'. Seems like a cop out.

I don't think it's an excuse either, but it's an unfortunate by-product of modern society. Not an excuse, but an explanation.
I believe that trauma is a big cause of lack of empathy. That is, being ill-equipped to cope with a certain event, often in youth.

That being said, do you believe that people are capable of correcting their trauma though? I still consider compassion to be innate. Take rape victims who take their tragedy and turn it into good. They promote public awareness and support for other rape victims. I think that goes to show that even in the most tragic of scenarios, good things can come from them.

I believe these people had better coping skills to deal with their trauma. There are also many rape victims who turn into nasty cold man-haters with no compassion even for other rape victims.
On a personal note, I would like to have more compassion than I do. Does that even make sense?

Maybe some people are better equipped than others for it. I suppose I can understand that aspect of how trauma affects people. It does make sense. Why can you not get more compassion for others then?
