Topic: The IRS website has a page to let people get new tax ID numbers but it shuts down on the weekend

Can anyone explain ANY possible logic for this??

Please note that no people are involved at any point in the process... it's all automated. No chat verification or anything.

Ugh.

Instead I can print off a form and... fax it to them. So that now a human has to review it and process it. Great! Efficient.

Their fax number works on the weekend, but their website does not. That makes sense.

Being an office manager or a payroll clerk or whatever you do sounds really boring

They can't afford weekend rates for the technical team to maintain the amiga computer it's running on

The webpage needs maintenance and the weekend is the least disruptive time to do it?

No, a tax identification number for things like businesses, estates, etc. Legal entities that aren't "real" people.

I imagine humans are involved somewhere otherwise what's to stop me for getting a tax id number for Sugondese Nuts, Inc?

Maybe they shut it down on nights and weekends so someone can manually review all the applications, request more info where needed, etc?

@previous (Meta !Sober//iZs)
No - when you use the website normally, the ID is generated automatically with no time for human review. I assume people don't just request bogus ID numbers on a regular basis because doing so would be a federal crime.
