Topic: How do I become a good person?

Catherine !ttGirlsPl2 started this discussion 7 years ago #77,806

I'm a fucking selfish drama-seeking attention whore. If I do good deeds then it would likely only be for my own self-satisfaction. I mean, sure, whenever someone asks me about what bus route to take or where to get somewhere I always help them out to the best of my abilities but that's because that seems like the right thing to do. And even then, that doesn't seem like it could make up for my selfish tendencies. I love the Santa Claus mythos because he gives without no thought of reward. One thing that bothers me about religions is that it encourages good behavior with positive rewards or the fear of eternal damnation. I just want to reach a level where I am good without any thought of reward or punishment, but I guess, that's just too unreachable for a human being.

There are religions that don’t believe in an afterlife. You should explore those if you feel positive reinforcement won’t allow you to live an authentic life.

Maybe? Who cares. People usually have a reason for doing things - good, bad, informed, misguided, whatever. There is some series of thoughts that led you to take every action you decide to take. If you really think about it, you can come up a scenario about why any action you take might be self-serving. Instead of worrying about being perfect, why not just try to be the kind of person you want to see in the world? Treat others like you would want to treated and try to help people out when you can.

If your goal is to be a better person, then just fucking do it. If that's the goal, then it can be it's own reward. Sometimes you'll miss the mark, but you're only human.

I hate the Golden Rule since it implies everyone should treat each other with respect but automatically assumes you want the same treatment in return. What if you wanted to do what is best for others while not caring about how they treat you?

@previous (Catherine !ttGirlsPl2)
Well, it's probably a good starting point for expectations about how to treat others. You're a creature who can use language, memory, abstract thinking, and all sorts of other things to develop a concept of what other people will want or need in a given situation. If you don't really care about that behavior being returned or don't value your happiness less than that of other people, then I guess you can accept that or seek to change it if it bothers you. Does that problem really stand in the way of you being a good person?

Of course not, it’s just a sort of annoyance to me for some reason.

I don't know. I just feel like most of us probably had the basic tools to reason out what a good person is as young children. Of course, it gets more complex as we get older and situations aren't as clear cut as they were on the playground. It seems like a lot of people worry too much about finding some framework to hang their ideas on so they can justify them rather than reflecting on how their actions would look to them if it were someone else doing it and judging themselves as they judge others. You probably have all the tools you need to be a good person. Actually doing it can be kind of hard though.

Step 2:Stand in middle of freeway, and every time a car comes by flip off the driver.
Step 3:???
Step 4: Become good person.

Reward is keeping that belly full of food.

I'm a student enrolled in a community college that is now working on transferable units to a university.
I'm sure this is more than enough than anything you accomplished in your sad days posting on internet message boards.

I never knew the milk and cookies were incentives for him to leave presents, but maybe it's different in different parts of the world.

Why would this make you love the Santa Claus mythos?

@previous (K)
I made someone seriously think about that notion on Facebook so someone thought it was profound at least.

So I did a fast quick look at your options where you live

"Azusa Pacific University is a private, evangelical Christian university in Azusa, California." with a small outlet in Victorvill

It appears they cater to Nursing programs - Bed pans and perhaps more? But they say UP Front ( Avg cost after aid $27K )

Of course the main campus in Whittier, California offers more but a quick view and it appears one should be willing to speak in tongues and become a Holy Roller nor do they have any courses on becoming a member of the Army of Allah

Actually, one university that might have what I am going for is Cal State San Bernardino, but I just realized that I should schedule a meeting with a representative soon as advised by my counselor. A friend of mine also looking to attend university also heard that it's a good school too.
