Not supporting gay marriage doesn't mean you want to see gay kids suffer, and of the few that do, I'm sure they don't even have a TV set or use Google. Polling people on their opinion on gay marriage is polling people on their tolerance/accepted of gays together (pretty much). It's a good benchmark for acceptedness.
