Topic: How could Jim Jones’ people have been so stupid?

How?

It was a gradual thing. They had practiced the suicide so many times that it was much less scary when it really happened

Its hard to say. He started out as a faith healer and recruited some people that way. Then he heavily advertised on behalf of race relations and actually did a lot for his black community. He would go to segregated restaurants and cafes and offer them hundreds of new customers if they would integrate.
He also kept people sleep deprived and had people sign over their possessions and real estate.
The sleep deprivation (and eventual lack of protein) makes it hard to make rational decisions.
Also its hard to leave a group when all of your friends and family gave joined, and you have no money, or car, or home to go back to

I understand that, but why would anyone follow him to begin with? Who would give over all of their possessions to someone?

Well many people did believe that he had supernatural powers. But also many many people were deeply moved by his words and actions of racial harmony. Many people in the cult were black and or women, who have the most religiosity out of every one.
Gradually they began a Communist lifestyle (they called themselves Socialist at first) and so it makes sense why they would give their things away. It was a group collective.

They would also pull people out of the ghettos and give them a better life than they ever had, they got people jobs, sent people to school, even ran drug and alcohol detox programs.

What was Jones’ reasoning for the suicide? Why did he want to do it?

For one thing, he had always been obsessed with death his whole life, and near the end, he was on high doses of uppers and downers and was very paranoid.
He had ran and taken like a 1000 followers to South America because two of his former members of upper management were on a child custody dispute with him. So they were threatening to take their child back.
Also in the US, after years and years and glowing admiration from famous politicians (including Harvey Milk) newspapers were finally running allegations about him in the newspapers and magazines. So many people had family stuck in the cult, that they formed a Concerned Relatives group.

Also conditions in Guyana got worse and worse. They had taken all of these city people and expected them to know how to farm. The land that they farmed on had shitty soil and they were miles from a water source, so food shortages became frequent. Sometimes they only had rice and gravy to eat or cassava root and no protein. He ate like a king though.

You should read about conditions in the compound it was ducked up. He would spend hours over the intercom system rambling and then quiz people on what they heard. They would get punished for failing quizzes, even the manual laborers and the elderly

After work was over, the upper management and many others would go through "catharsis" meetings where people would be accused of being racist or sexist, or feminizas, or male chauvinistic pigs. If you were accused, you had to stoically accept all of the accusations, no matter how crazy.
And during this time, Jones was fucking both men and women consensually and against their will. He would force sex on someone, and then call them out during the catharsis meeting the next day and say that the victim was stressing him out with constant sexual demands.

Also every one called themselves niggers, white niggers, etc and said that sometimes the only way to triumph over white people was to break into your"crazy nigger" routine. Lmao. This shit was so fucked up.
Another thing that they did was drug people and leave them in catatonic states if they were acting up or showing mental instabilities. They also had a sensory deprivation box where they would keep people for days up to weeks when they got out of line. Oh and they would force people to box each other and increase the strength of the other opponent and the one who was to be punished got beaten down. They even did this to kids.

Oh and Jim Jones also preached that everyone was gay, but him. So that if anyone had or wanted to have heterosexual relations, they were overcompensating for their gayness.

Communal living has historically been a really common theme among many breakaway Christian sects. More than just the Anabaptist sects like the Amish and Mennonites, also the Bruderhof Communities, the Shakers, the Twelve Tribes, etc. The Mormons had a version of communal living early on in the movement where people would pool property and resources. There's a good deal of scriptural basis for it based on how Jesus and the apostles lived and moved around.

I'd only get scared of Bernie if he starts pretending he talks to God.

Another interesting thing that happened at Jonestown: They had a man who was a pedophile there and attempted to give him therapy for his deviance. It didn't take and he ended up molesting a little boy. Since The Peoples Temple didn't believe in involving the police or court system into their business, they brought the child molester in front of the whole populace and brutally beat his penis with a rubber hose.

@previous (MR MIKE PENCE)
The first time he did it, he only did it to the inner circle. He had been preaching the idea of revolutionary suicide as a way to get back at their persecutors. So he called them all into a meeting (which was normal), and offered them wine (which wasn't normal). Then after everyone had drank the liquid, he told everyone that he had poisoned them. Some people believed him and some had been instructed beforehand to pretend to collapse and die. After a suitable amount of time had passed, he announced that it was all a test. And the people who didn't react stoically, were castigated. I believe that they were already in Guyana by the time he was running poison drills on the peons, which was a hard situation to get out of.
