I can see why people like it, but you can get the exact same parts, typically from the same vendors (Foxconn) and build it yourself, and then install Mac OS X hackintosh style.
This is exactly what Psystar was doing, building the same computers with the same (often better) specs, and at thousands of dollars less.
The only difference? The one single difference?One has an Apple logo on it.

Why bother? Most people buy desktops from retail stores instead of assembling their own.

It's really not that hard. People just assume it is hard and are intimidated by it, and the big computer comapnies prey on this attitude to make people think that unless you buy a computer from them you're getting a rigged together piece of junk. This attitude makes it that much harder for serious system builders to break into the market, and keeps would-be system builders from even trying.
