They were touristing in a cave facility when a sudden flood swept them away deep into the cave complex, which is now completely flooded. The waters are receding but not fast enough, and the kids will need to learn how to cave dive and swim the 2 and a half (iirc) miles to the entrance. It's a sports team and their coach.
