If the mother had done it, and lost custody of the child, would you be okay with it?

Slapping is not abusive. He told her to stop, and then did it. If it happened in the future, she probably would have stopped. Tough love is necessary sometimes.
If he did other stuff, get him on that, not the slapping.

The point is that this is a single lapse of judgement which robbed a child of her father. Molestation, stabbing, or drugging are all things which are usually premeditated and have debilitating consequences.
