This one wasn't your usual killer shit, because it relies on a word being wrong ('Giant' when it should be 'Giants', plural. The mental patient could just have easily replied "There is no such team". Do you see why the joke doesn't work? If you told this joke in a club, everyone would start murmuring after the set-up and before the punchline, saying "A what fan? What does that mean, a 'Giant' fan, what team is the 'Giant'? Did he mean to say the Giants?" It's likely they wouldn't even hear your punchline over the sound of confused chattering.
