The airplane turns off halfway through, and the pilot prays to God in order to let God land the plane by the power of prayer.

Prayer in this case would make no difference to the fate of the plane (which is to say, it would crash). Though we're enjoined as Christians to 'pray for our daily bread' (i.e life itself), and to use prayer as a means of communion with God, that doesn't mean prayer is like a child's letter to Santa Claus. God does not 'grant wishes' (if he did, everybody would be rich and healthy and nobody would ever die in pain). God granted humans free will. If the pilot chose to abandon his duty to land the plane, the plane would crash, and it would be the pilot's fault, not God's.

Let me know if you have any other questions regarding Christianity's approach to the efficacy of prayer. And God bless you!
