Check out a larger version of the same picture. I think that might be a dummy on the table. Maybe they have medical dummies in the lab to plan and organize particularly demanding surgeries that require many surgeons and support staff?

I don't know. Maybe the photographer wanted to get a shot that communicated who these people were and what they were doing? Photographers like to try to get a picture that tells the whole story at once. Maybe some wise-ass on staff thought it would be funny to try to recreate a scene from Idiocracy to elicit a giggle from readers? Maybe the doctors decided on it? Maybe news agencies know a photo like this will make you ask questions and click on the story?
