I think there's always been some incarnation of that idea around - that some greater truth about a person was evident from studying small clues in their behavior. Some have been more evidence based than others, but they generally produce a pseudoscientific set of generalizations that are about as useful as a door-to-door salesman thinking his canned spiel will result in a sale every time.
